In 1868, eight year old Mary Vaux received a set of watercolor paints and began experimenting with painting flowers. She became an active outdoorswoman, naturalist, and photographer, but her success came when she began to concentrate on botanical illustration. In 1913 she met Charles Doolittle Walcott, then secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and they were married a year later.
