New for 2012, Botanical Prints from the Smithsonian Institution. In 1868, eight year old Mary Vaux received a set of watercolor paints and began experimenting with painting flowers. She became an active outdoorswoman, naturalist, and photographer, but her success came when she began to concentrate on botanical illustration. In 1913 she met Charles Doolittle Walcott, then secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, and they were married a year later. The couple spent several months each year travelling; Dr. Walcott conducted geological and paleontological studies and Mary Vaux Walcott painted hundreds of watercolor studies of native flowers. At the urging of botanists and wildflower enthusiasts, four hundred of her more than 1000 illustrations were published in 1925 by the Smithsonian Institution in a five-volume edition titled North American Wild Flowers. These illustrations are not only beautiful but technically precise. Each month in Botanical Prints 2012 features a richly colored plant variety and a spacious grid with moon phases and international holidays. There are sections at the back of the calendar to record emergency contact information and birthdays/anniversaries and a full-page 3-year at-a-glance.
